Synopsis

Going round the world alone is always exciting and never easy, but imagine doing it with no Google, no mobile phones, no email, no credit cards, no money machines , nothing digital, and only the sketchiest idea of what challenges any of 45 countries might, offer. From Kodachrome pictures taken at the time, a few scratchy but evocative tapes and a recorded commentary, Ted Simon has made a film of the first months of his Jupiter journey, starting in 1973, which takes you deep into the experience, its perils and its rewards.

To use Ted's own words, "What I would like to do is show a short film I've made which tries to evoke a sense of the difficulties and rewards of going out into the world in 1973, to talk about the journey in general and then discuss how the world looked to me 28 years later on my second time around".

Profile

In 1948, at the age of 17, Ted made his first solitary journey, by bicycle, from London through a ravaged France to the Mediterranean. After a spell in the RAF and then as a journalist, he sold everything and went to live in and restore a 13th century ruin in the South of France. After a few years, he decided it was time to see the world and in 1973 he set out to do so on a motorcycle. His four year journey was later described in his book, Jupiter's Travels, which reached a global audience and made him a legend in the motorcycling world.
