Synopsis

With very little planning or preparation, no previous experience of cycle touring and having only met each other a few months previously, Tori James and Maria Leijerstam loaded their bikes onto international flights to New Zealand with the intention of cycling 2400km from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Their journey was powered by an unrelenting appetite for extreme physical challenges, and more than a few blueberry muffins! This will be an entertaining talk which will either leave you wanting an ice-cream or reaching for the chamois cream!

Profile

In 2005, The Pink Lady PoleCats became the first ever all-female team to complete The Polar Challenge, a gruelling 360 mile race to the Magnetic North Pole. Two years later, at the age of 25, one of their members, Tori James, became the first ever Welsh woman to climb Mount Everest. The BBC documentary ‘On Top of the World' was produced using the video footage which she shot whilst climbing the mountain. Maria Leijerstam is a British adventure racer and the first Welsh woman to have completed the Marathon Des Sables, a 151 mile foot race across the Sahara desert in temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius. In May 2010 Maria launched Multisport Wales. Tori and Maria are two of the founders of Cardiff Explorers which is featured on our blog.
